Are they really that smart?

Why do the politicians assume that they know better than everyone else? They think that they can run car companies, insurance companies, medical practices, banks and just about everything else better than the people in those industries. There isn't a business in existence that the politicians don't think they know how to run better than the people who actually work in those areas. The problem is, they have little incentive to get it right. They generally pay no price when they get it wrong. Then they use the next crisis (caused by their policy!) to justify giving them still more power!
A good example of this is the AIG bonus mess. The legislation that Congress voted for and the President signed ALLOWED those bonuses! Then once the public got wind of it, they acted as though they were surprised by it! Now, there are only two explanations for their 'surprise'. Either they didn't read the bill to begin with, or they knew it was there when they voted for it and are just covering up. Neither of these is acceptable. Both of these expose the real problem with our government. There is no accountability.
